The Colombe d`Or – a highlight for every Riviera connoisseur

By Kristina Flesner

“Don’t linger too long, there is much more beautiful to come in every respect.” I can’t describe it better than the Rivera connoisseurs Erika and Klaus Manns in their wonderful book from the Riviera, when the talk is about St. Paul and the Colombe d’Or. “The Café de la Colombe d’Or,” in fact, is “the center and meeting place of all those who want to enjoy St. Paul’s charm and picturesque bounty.”

We take a trip to St. Paul de Vence and meet friends for dinner at the traditional Colombe d’Or restaurant in the heart of St. Paul de Vence.

As early as 1931, Paul and Baptistine Roux opened the café “La Colombe d’Or”. At that time, they could not have imagined that this place would one day become world-famous.

Paul Roux was deeply rooted in the artistic scene; he was especially close friends with painters. Thus he became a passionate art collector. He did not hesitate when famous painters wanted to pay for their meals and lodging at his place with paintings. La Colombe d’Or became a meeting place for the artists’ scene. The walls are still full of art by famous painters.

One afternoon, Matisse’s limousine, coming from Nice, parked in front of the café. Paul Roux and Matisse became friends. Later Miró, Chagall and Léger etc. also came. Many artists settled in the area and came to eat and party at the café. Word spread all the way to high society in Paris. The Prince of Wales and the King of Sweden were also regular visitors to the establishment. The guest book of the house is legendary.

Even today, the popular chicken is served with thyme. A recipe that “Titine” inherited from her mother-in-law. Large bouquets of flowers decorate the salon. One feels transported to the 20s. Because not much has changed here. The reception, the bar, the restaurant. Everything has a morbid, distinctive charm.

My favorite photo is this one in the bar with the portrait of Pablo Picasso.

A view from the bar into the beautiful garden.

Also on the terrace art should not be missing

This large map can be easily studied even with impaired vision… White tablecloths. The porcelain bears the emblem, the golden dove of the restaurant.

A wonderful evening with an international audience. Our friends stay overnight in one of the guest rooms. That is also the reason why we were able to get a table reservation at such short notice.

One thing is certain, we would definitely like to come here again at a cooler time of year and take a seat in the salon.

St. Paul de Vence with its very narrow streets is definitely a tourist place. However, it is very well-kept. One art gallery follows the next. But also Provençal delicacies and handmade fans can be found here.

From a viewing platform at one end of the town, you also have a great view inland.

For the occasion I’m wearing a floral dress by Dolce & Gabbana (from Breuninger) and a clutch with a Frida Kahlo motif by Linda Pampa. The jewelry is from Brauksiepe Goldschmiedemanufaktur.

Bye, bye South of France! I am already looking forward to the next time! Soon again news from Düsseldorf …
